Sport
At Luton Infant and Nursery School, our aim is to provide high quality PE sessions that inspire children to participate in a wide range of sporting activities. We ensure that the children have access to carefully planned schemes of work that are designed to motivate and ensure progression. Children are advised to have 2 hours of PE lessons a week, at Luton each Key Stage 1 class has two PE sessions a week, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the areas we cover in PE are: dance, gym, balanceability and team games such as tag rugby, tennis, kwick cricket and football.
Government guidelines state that children should be active for at least 60 minutes every day, 30 of these should be in school. Through the use of the Play Pod and engaging the children in a variety of games and activities, we encourage the children to be active throughout their outdoor play at playtimes and lunchtimes. Our highly successful Forest School programme also encourages the children to be active throughout the school week.
Luton Infant and Nursery School provides a range of sports and clubs throughout the year for Key Stage 1 and EYFS. Children are encouraged to be active throughout the school day and during after school clubs. The Sports Premium funding has enabled us to extend our provision. Competitions
Sports fixtures are arranged for the Terms 4, 5 and 6 to encourage children's involvement in team competition. We anually enter teams for inter-school tournaments in infant agility and tri-golf. The children really enjoyed our first tri-golf competition last year in which we came 6th out of 18 schools. These events introduce children to competition at a higher level so that they can compete and test their skills against other schools.
Mini Sports Crew
Sport and physical activity is used to encourage children's leadership, individual initiative, social skills and team building skills. We run a mini sports crew programme in which year 2 children are trained to volunteer at lunchtimes to encourage other children with healthy eating, team games and being active.
Balanceability
Children in Reception complete a Balanceability course . Balanceability teaches children under six the skills required to learn to ride a pedal bicycle. Through the use of pedal-less bikes, Balanceability eradicates the use of stabilisers and promotes the fundamental skill of cycling, which is balance. The programme comprises structured lesson plans that help children develop gross motor skills, spatial awareness, dynamic and static balance, bilateral co-ordination along with the necessary skills to make the transition from a balance bike to an ordinary pedal bike in a safe, challenging but fun way.
Street Dance
We have courses of Street Dance sessions that run for children in Key Stage 1. These sessions are free of charge and are offered to each class in turn throughout the year, please speak to the office if you have any queries about this or would like your child to attend. They are a great way for children to keep active and work in a team to learn a group dance.
Maths of the Day
We have recently introduced a new scheme to supplement our Maths learning called ‘Maths of the Day’. These are maths lessons that help to encourage children to be more active within their learning. Children are enjoying the opportunity to get more hands on with their maths and it has been a great way to help cover the national curriculum and keep our children active.
