Intent
The art curriculum at Luton primary school aims to inspire and nurture creativity, self-expression, and a lifelong appreciation for the Arts. We believe that art education is essential for the holistic development of our pupils, fostering their imagination, critical thinking, and emotional well-being. Art at Luton primary is a vehicle for developing a wide range of lifelong skills such as problem solving, resilience, collaboration, and communication. We aim to develop a range of lifelong skills and techniques that pupils can apply to other areas of the curriculum and the wider world.
The art curriculum is designed to progressively develop students' artistic skills and understanding from early childhood through primary school. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children are introduced to basic art concepts through play-based learning, exploring colours, shapes, and textures with various materials and tools to help develop fine motor skills and cultivate independence in their creative development. Moving into Key Stage 1 (KS1), the focus shifts to developing basic artistic skills and encouraging creative expression. Students experiment with different techniques and materials, including drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. By Key Stage 2 (KS2), students build on these foundations, deepening their understanding of art concepts and techniques. They study famous artists and art movements, create more complex artworks such as printing and photography to develop their own artistic style.
Goals:
· Creative Expression: Encourage students to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through various artistic mediums. They will explore different techniques and materials to develop their unique artistic voice.
· Artistic Skills: Provide students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to fully experiment, experience and create art. This includes understanding the elements of art (line, shape, colour, texture, form, space, and value) and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity). It is also about having access to a wide range of mediums and pupils being able to understand their properties and experiment and create with these.
· Cultural Awareness: Expose students to a diverse range of artists, art forms, and cultural traditions. They will learn to appreciate the rich history and cultural significance of art from around the world.
· Critical Thinking: Develop students' ability to analyse and interpret artworks. They will learn to discuss and critique art, considering the context, meaning, and techniques used by artists.
· Personal Growth: Foster a positive and inclusive environment where students feel confident to take risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes. Art education will support their emotional and social development, helping them build resilience and self-esteem.
At Luton Primary School, we recognise that art can be the key to the curriculum and bringing our multi-cultural and diverse community together to create well-rounded pupils who are life-long learner. Art can provide children with the experiences and tools to acquire, retain and use powerful knowledge to unlock and succeed in both the classroom and the ever-changing outside world.
