Music

Intent
‘Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity’
(The National Curriculum)
The music curriculum at Luton Primary School aims to inspire creativity and self-expression; develop confidence and encourage our pupils on their musical journey as well as giving them wider opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills. We endeavour to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. Our curriculum focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that students need to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. By listening and responding to different musical styles and finding their voices as singers, performers and composers, we will enable them to become confident, reflective musicians and be able to apply their musical knowledge to new situations and instruments.
Our curriculum introduces pupils to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching pupils to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities. Pupils will develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down. Through music, our curriculum helps pupils develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.
The music curriculum is designed to be progressive and develop students’ musical skills and knowledge from Early Years and throughout. The children will develop their listening and evaluating skills; explore creating sounds through their voice and instruments; recognise and read musical notation and patterns; improvise and compose their own music; and develop their performances. Children will also have the opportunity to study famous composers and a range of genres throughout history; alongside this, children will also be exposed and taught about music from different countries and cultures.
Goals:
- Creative Expression: Encourage students to express their own thoughts and feelings through composing music using their voice and/or instruments.

- Careers: Develop students' knowledge and understanding of careers in the music industry.
- Personal Growth: Foster a positive and inclusive environment where students feel confident to take risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes which will complement our school ethos as well as our art curriculum.
