EYFS at Luton Primary School
Intent
At Luton Primary School, our Early Years curriculum is designed around the principle that every child is unique and that the child is at the centre of all we do. We aim to ensure every child makes strong progress from their starting points and develops the foundations needed for lifelong learning, in line with the Statutory EYFS Framework.
We recognise that many children enter with limited prior experiences and gaps in learning. Our curriculum is therefore carefully sequenced and deliberately enriched to broaden children’s knowledge, language and understanding, ensuring equity of opportunity. Through a balance of play‑based and structured learning, we nurture curiosity, independence and the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
Strong emphasis is placed on the Prime Areas—particularly Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Communication and Language—as the building blocks for success across the Specific Areas. We prioritise vocabulary development, oracy and emotional regulation, enabling children to build positive relationships, communicate confidently and access early literacy and mathematics successfully.
Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, with high-quality texts, stories, rhymes and songs enriching language and supporting early reading behaviours. Our inclusive and equitable provision ensures all children, including those with SEND and EAL, are supported to achieve their potential. Our curriculum also promotes our school rules—Ready, Respectful and Safe—and the values of Dignity, Aspiration, Respect and Equity, reflecting our commitment to children’s rights and wellbeing.
Through intentional planning, skilled teaching and responsive provision, children leave EYFS confident, capable and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
